Universitatea Craiova Eliminated After Dramatic 3–2 Collapse in Athens
Universitatea Craiova’s European campaign came to a heartbreaking end on Thursday night, falling 3–2 away to AEK Athens in one of the most dramatic finishes of this season’s UEFA Conference League.
Craiova led 2–0 through goals from Ștefan Baiaram (29’) and Alexandru Cicâldău (58’), but conceded three times after the 64th minute, including two goals deep into stoppage time, to surrender their advantage and exit the competition.
A Stunning Turnaround
AEK began their comeback when Domagoj Vida headed in for 2–1 in the 65th minute. Craiova appeared to be holding on, but the match exploded in added time:
- Dereck Kutesa equalised in the 90+8’ minute.
- Luka Jović completed the remontada with a 90+15’ penalty, sealing Craiova’s elimination.
The chaotic finale also saw Pavlo Isenko sent off in the 90+16’ minute as frustrations boiled over.
European Journey Ends in Pain
The defeat leaves Universitatea Craiova finishing the league phase outside the qualification places, ending their hopes of reaching the knockout round. AEK Athens, already qualified, secured direct passage to the last 16 with the victory.
For Craiova, the night will be remembered as a missed opportunity — a match they controlled for long stretches before succumbing to one of the most dramatic late turnarounds of the Conference League season.
