Texans Coach Praises Lions’ Grit and Talent After Joint Practice

Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has high praise for the Detroit Lions, citing their relentless drive and impressive execution as standout qualities.

Reflecting on last season’s clash between the two teams, Ryans recalled how the Lions overcame a 16-point halftime deficit and a 10-point gap in the fourth quarter to snatch victory with a last-second 52-yard field goal. Despite the loss, Ryans came away admiring Detroit’s resilience and the leadership of head coach Dan Campbell.

That admiration played a role in the Texans’ decision to travel early to Detroit for joint practices ahead of Saturday’s preseason finale at Ford Field.

“I really appreciated how Dan had his team prepared. We practiced in a professional, efficient way and got solid reps across all phases,” Ryans said after Thursday’s session.

He highlighted the Lions’ offensive speed and playmaking ability, noting how they pushed Houston’s defense to adapt. On the flip side, Detroit’s defense also impressed, forcing the Texans to elevate their game.

Ryans singled out several Lions players, including Alabama alumni Jahmyr Gibbs and Jameson Williams, whose explosiveness stood out. He also praised edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, calling him “explosive” and commending his impact on the edge after returning from a serious leg injury.

Looking ahead to the preseason matchup, Ryans expressed optimism about Detroit’s prospects. With back-to-back NFC North titles under Campbell, the Lions have earned a reputation for disciplined, competitive football.

“They’re tough, they communicate well, and they make you earn every yard,” Ryans said. “They’re fundamentally sound and well-coached. Teams like that know how to win.”
