NHL Trade Buzz: Hughes and Robertson Address Offseason Speculation

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes and Dallas Stars winger Jason Robertson were both hot topics in offseason trade chatter. Now, with training camps in full swing and the 2025–26 season approaching, team executives are speaking out.

In Vancouver, Hughes’ future drew attention after Canucks president Jim Rutherford acknowledged the star blueliner’s desire to eventually play alongside his brothers, Jack and Luke, who are with the New Jersey Devils. Hughes, still two years away from unrestricted free agency, remains central to the Canucks’ plans. Rutherford emphasized during the team’s media day that while Hughes’ long-term decision is ultimately his own, the organization is committed to building a competitive roster around him to encourage an extension.

Ben Kuzma of The Province reported that Rutherford and GM Patrik Allvin pursued a second-line center this summer but were deterred by steep trade demands. Kuzma suggested the team may need to make a tough call to fill that gap. A strong season could convince Hughes to re-sign as early as July, but another playoff miss might prompt him to explore options. Kuzma also noted that teams like the Detroit Red Wings are keeping tabs on Hughes’ situation, though it’s unclear if the Devils are among them.

Despite the uncertainty, the Canucks maintain their priority is to ice the best possible lineup—whether Hughes stays or not.

Meanwhile in Dallas, Jason Robertson’s name surfaced in trade rumors following the Stars’ exit from the Western Conference Final. According to Lia Assimakopoulos of The Dallas Morning News, GM Jim Nill dismissed the speculation, attributing it to the team’s need to reduce payroll. While some clubs inquired about Robertson, Dallas instead moved Mason Marchment to Seattle and Matt Dumba to Pittsburgh.

Nill confirmed he had no plans to trade Robertson, who will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights next summer. Although contract negotiations are currently paused, both sides are aiming for a long-term agreement. Robertson, earning $7.75 million annually, could command a sizable raise if he delivers another strong season.
