Mat Sadler Reflects on Walsall’s Win Over Salford City

Walsall manager Mat Sadler was full of admiration for his team following their hard-fought victory against Salford City at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium on Saturday.

A decisive header from Harrison Burke sealed the win in a match where Walsall consistently created the better chances.

“I thought we were excellent,” Sadler said.
“We started with real intensity. In the opening half hour, my only frustration was that we didn’t convert more of our opportunities. We forced Salford into multiple tactical changes, especially in midfield, as they tried to disrupt our rhythm. That first 30 minutes was outstanding, and it’s just a shame we didn’t have more goals to show for it. Once we did score, they adjusted again, which changed the dynamic.”

At halftime, Sadler emphasized the importance of staying focused, reminding his players that they’re still building chemistry as a relatively new squad.

“We’re still forming as a group,” he explained.
“There were moments where our connections weren’t quite there, especially when the opposition changed shape. We were sometimes too eager, which left gaps. That’s something we addressed during the break.”

Despite pointing out areas for improvement, Sadler was quick to acknowledge the quality of the opposition and the significance of the result.

“I’m being a bit picky, really,” he admitted.
“Salford are a strong side this season, with a big budget and the freedom to bring in top talent. So for us to take control of the game the way we did—it’s a huge positive. I’m very happy with the performance.”
