Former Raiders Coach Jon Gruden Emerges as Potential Candidate for NFL Head Coaching Roles
As the 2024 NFL regular season nears its conclusion, several teams are expected to search for new head coaches, with potential vacancies anticipated at franchises like the New Orleans Saints, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, and Las Vegas Raiders. Among the candidates reportedly drawing attention is Jon Gruden, the former and controversial Raiders head coach, who may be positioning himself for a return to the league.
NFL insider Tom Pelissero recently reported that multiple teams are considering Gruden as a potential hire, although specific organizations remain unnamed. “Keep an eye on Jon Gruden,” Pelissero advised. He highlighted that Gruden has not held a full-time role in the NFL since 2021, when he resigned after the release of emails containing offensive language that he had sent during his tenure as an ESPN analyst. Despite this, Gruden has stayed connected to the NFL, appearing on the sidelines with the Buccaneers’ ownership earlier this season and working with the Saints during their 2023 training camp.
Pelissero also noted that Gruden, now a Barstool Sports content creator, is under evaluation by several teams. “It’s not guaranteed that Jon Gruden will return,” he said, “but multiple organizations are conducting thorough assessments of his coaching capabilities and personal history. It wouldn’t be surprising if his name surfaces in head coaching interviews in the coming weeks.”
Although Gruden’s departure from the Raiders in 2021 followed a scandal involving offensive emails sent over a decade, he has remained active within the NFL as a media analyst. Some insiders even speculated he could have joined the Saints as an offensive coordinator last season had he pursued the role.
