The New England Patriots brought Jerod Mayo on board as their head coach last offseason with hopes he could steer the team into a new era after Bill Belichick. However, his debut season has not gone as expected, with the team now on pace to secure the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Patriots have struggled on both sides of the ball this year. While rookie quarterback Drake Maye has shown promise as New England’s future signal-caller, the offense still ranks a dismal 30th in scoring. On the defensive side, the unit sits at 26th, but Mayo’s leadership should ensure gradual improvements moving forward.
But the burning question remains: what will happen with the offense? Mayo might need additional support to help unlock Maye’s full potential. Fortunately, that help might be just around the corner.
The Patriots are reportedly eyeing Josh McCown, currently the quarterback coach for the Minnesota Vikings, as a potential hire for their offensive coordinator position. This would be an exciting development for Maye, who shares a history with McCown, having coached him in high school. The move could be exactly what the Patriots need to get their young quarterback on track as they plan for a brighter future.
