FCU Craiova 1948 Expelled from Romanian Football Competitions Amid Financial Turmoil
Craiova, Romania — September 2025
FCU Craiova 1948, one of Romania’s most storied football clubs, has been officially excluded from all competitions by the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), following a series of disciplinary rulings tied to unresolved financial obligations.
The FRF’s Disciplinary Commission cited Article 85, paragraph 1(c) of its regulations in its decision to expel the club and relegate it to a lower category. This follows a staggering 94-point deduction and a prior demotion to Liga 3, Romania’s third tier.
Legal and Financial Fallout
The club, owned by Adrian Mititelu, has faced mounting debts to former players, coaches, and third-party entities. Despite multiple warnings and deadlines, FCU Craiova failed to provide proof of payment, triggering the harshest sanction yet.
Mititelu responded defiantly, calling the decision “legally worthless” and vowing to challenge it in court. “This is a decision made by impostors. It will be annulled,” he stated, referencing a recent CJUE ruling that allows national courts to overturn sports federation decisions.
A Long Descent
The club’s troubles date back over a decade, with Mititelu alleging systemic abuse and unfair competition from local rivals and football authorities. In a public statement, FCU Craiova claimed it could no longer withstand “hostility and unfair competition” in the city, blaming the FRF and LPF for orchestrating its downfall.
Despite the exclusion, the club insists its operations will continue, hinting at legal battles and possible reinstatement. “This is not the end,” Mititelu declared.
