Nuggets Mailbag: GM Search, Michael Porter Jr.’s Future, and More…
Is Ben Tenzer the frontrunner for the Nuggets’ GM position? Would it make more sense to wait until next summer for a major trade?
Ben Tenzer and Matt Lloyd are the two most talked-about candidates for Denver’s general manager role. Though neither has held the title of director of basketball operations, both are known around the league for being intelligent, personable, and skilled at building relationships—qualities the Nuggets value, especially in improving internal culture and communication with agents.
One agent praised Lloyd, who currently works under Tim Connelly with the Timberwolves, though Connelly has confirmed he’s staying in Minnesota for now. Tenzer, serving as interim GM since April, has earned high praise from Josh Kroenke, and the team has a history of promoting from within. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Tenzer land the GM job, possibly alongside a new president of basketball operations.
Other names might still surface, but with the NBA Draft and free agency approaching, Denver likely wants someone in place soon.
Is Michael Porter Jr. on the trade block?
Rumors of trading MPJ have circulated for a while, but it’s unlikely the Nuggets will move him this offseason. Although nothing is impossible in the NBA—just ask the Timberwolves and Karl-Anthony Towns—the ownership seems inclined to keep their core intact for another run.
Josh Kroenke has expressed a desire to focus on internal development and strategic additions via free agency. MPJ remains a critical part of the roster due to his size and three-point shooting. However, his large contract and injury history limit his trade value. Even if Denver explores deals, they may not find one worth making.
Financially, the Nuggets are close to the luxury tax “second apron” threshold, especially with Jamal Murray’s new contract coming. By 2026, they may need to cut costs, and with Porter’s contract nearing its end, he could become more tradable. Next summer might be the more logical window for a potential deal.
Did David Adelman’s “interim” title impact Game 7 officiating?
Some fans questioned whether Adelman’s lack of official head coach status affected how referees treated Game 7 against the Thunder. However, the players have shown strong support for Adelman, even after the loss, indicating confidence in his leadership.
Adelman did speak out about officiating earlier in the playoffs and frequently challenged refs during games. While he’s less confrontational than Michael Malone, he’s still engaged. Ultimately, Oklahoma City’s intense defensive style dictates officiating more than any coach’s sideline antics. The Thunder successfully used tactics like small defenders on Jokic to disrupt Denver’s rhythm, but officiating wasn’t the main reason for the series loss.
Pascal Siakam over Haliburton for ECF MVP?
Yes, it was a surprise. Although Siakam had great efficiency, Haliburton was the engine behind Indiana’s offense and deserved the award. His combination of scoring, playmaking, and a clutch Game 4 moment made him the Pacers’ most valuable player in the series.
Free Agency Outlook: Who should Denver target?
With the GM seat still unfilled, free agency plans remain fluid. However, Bruce Brown is a clear candidate to return and help the bench. The team could also use a dependable backup for Jokic, with names like Mason Plumlee, Larry Nance Jr., or Precious Achiuwa mentioned as possible fits.
