Birmingham City Begin Talks to Sign Long-Term Target Kwame Poku

Birmingham City have entered early discussions to bring in Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku, a player they’ve tracked for some time.

According to Football Insider, the newly promoted Championship side, who recently celebrated their League One title win, are already setting sights on strengthening for next season, with Poku high on their list of priorities.

The 23-year-old, who has been on Birmingham’s radar for a while, is set to become a free agent this summer after declining a record-breaking contract extension from Peterborough. However, because he will still be under 24 at the start of the 2025–26 season, any potential move will involve a compensation fee.

Talks are said to be progressing between Birmingham and Poku’s camp as the club looks to wrap up a deal that could be seen as a major transfer coup. Since joining from Colchester in 2021, Poku has made a strong impression at Peterborough. Despite being sidelined for part of the season due to a hamstring injury, he still produced 12 goals and 11 assists, solidifying his status as one of League One’s most dangerous attacking threats.

Interest in Poku isn’t limited to Birmingham—other EFL clubs and Scottish giants Rangers are also keeping tabs on him. However, Birmingham’s pursuit is longstanding. Peterborough’s Director of Football and former Blues boss Barry Fry acknowledged their interest last summer and recently reiterated: “They’re still after one of mine but they’re going to have to cough up.”

Speculation increased after Birmingham chairman Tom Wagner was spotted chatting with Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony at Wembley during the Vertu Motors Trophy final. MacAnthony later revealed their conversation included recruitment and specific players, fueling further talk about Poku.

The timing was particularly striking, as Poku played a pivotal role in Peterborough’s win over Birmingham in the final at Wembley. Despite Birmingham winning their recent league encounter 2-1, Poku stood out by scoring and pointing to his name on the back of his shirt in front of the travelling Birmingham fans—a moment that clearly made an impression.

Back in the Championship, Birmingham are focused on building a competitive squad, and Poku is seen as someone who can offer creativity, flair, and goal-scoring ability. Whether they can fend off competition for his signature remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt he’s firmly in their plans for their Championship campaign.
