Four individuals were injured in a shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas on Tuesday afternoon. Dallas Fire-Rescue confirmed that at least three of the victims are students, with one in serious condition.
While authorities have identified the shooter, they have not yet apprehended the suspect. As a result, the school will remain closed for the rest of the week.
The shooting occurred almost exactly one year after a similar incident at the same campus.
Details on the Victims: Police and emergency responders arrived at the scene around 1 p.m. Tuesday. Four male victims were transported to the hospital, with three suffering gunshot wounds and one sustaining a “musculoskeletal injury” to the lower body. Of these victims, only one is in serious condition, while the others are in stable condition. Victims’ ages range from 15 to 18, though the age of the fourth victim remains unknown.
A source informed FOX 4 that a 17-year-old student was shot in the lower leg.
Response from Officials: Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins assured the public that the injuries were not life-threatening, stating, “We don’t have any critical injuries at this time. Pray for the victims and their families.”
Dallas ISD Assistant Police Chief Christiana Smith confirmed the shooter’s identity but noted they are still in the process of locating and arresting them. Smith clarified that the gun was not brought through regular school security checks, and there was no failure of staff or protocols.
Witness Accounts: Sergio Campos, a parent and Wilmer City Council member, described hearing about seven gunshots while on campus. He saw victims being carried out, one with a leg injury. Campos noted that students were fleeing the campus in large numbers.
Student Reaction: Freshman Salondra Ibanez shared her experience, recalling hearing the gunshots and immediately seeking shelter with her classmates behind a teacher’s desk before being escorted to safety.
