The Baltimore Orioles received a much-needed boost regarding their All-Star shortstop, Gunnar Henderson. Fortunately, the young star is feeling optimistic.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Henderson shared that he is making steady progress in his recovery from a mild right intercostal strain. The injury, sustained on February 27, briefly sidelined him, but he has recently resumed baseball activities. Determined to be ready for Opening Day on March 27 against the Toronto Blue Jays, Henderson confidently stated, “That’s my plan.”
According to the Orioles’ official website, Henderson added, “I’m on the right track, progressing… It’s a lot better than what it originally felt like.”
The 2023 AL Rookie of the Year had a breakout season, batting .281 with 37 home runs, 92 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases while posting an impressive 9.1 bWAR. His stellar performance earned him fourth place in AL MVP voting and helped lead Baltimore to its second consecutive playoff appearance.
With the Orioles already missing key pitchers Grayson Rodriguez (right triceps/elbow) and Andrew Kittredge (left knee), Henderson’s return would be a crucial boost. Manager Brandon Hyde remains cautiously optimistic, emphasizing that Henderson’s readiness will depend on his number of at-bats and how his body responds after game action.
Henderson himself is eager to play before Opening Day, with the team remaining in Florida for another week before their March 24 exhibition against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park.
