Eli Serrano III and Alex Sosa led No. 10 North Carolina State with three hits each, including a home run, to achieve an 8-5 victory over No. 7 Georgia on Monday, securing their place in the Men’s College World Series.
This game concluded the best-of-three Athens (Ga.) Super Regional. The MCWS, starting Friday in Omaha, Neb., will include four teams each from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference.
Garrett Pennington and Alec Makarewicz also hit home runs for the Wolfpack (38-21), marking their fourth appearance in the MCWS and their first since 2021.
NC State’s starting pitcher Logan Whitaker struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk. Jacob Dudan (4-2) earned the win in relief, and Derrick Smith secured his eighth save, pitching three innings of one-run ball.
Tre Phelps hit a two-run homer as part of his three-hit game, and Charlie Condon added another home run for the Bulldogs (43-17). Georgia’s starting pitcher Zach Harris (5-2) allowed three runs on eight hits in three-plus innings, striking out three.
Phelps initiated the scoring with a two-run homer in the second inning. Pennington’s two-run homer in the third tied the game. NC State took the lead for good when Matt Heavner scored on a passed ball in the fourth, followed by Makarewicz’s RBI single for a 4-2 advantage.
The Wolfpack maintained their lead with additional home runs from Serrano (sixth inning), Sosa (seventh), and Makarewicz (eighth).
