The St. Louis Cardinals have reportedly struck a deal with free-agent reliever Phil Maton, formerly of the New York Mets, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The agreement is said to be worth $2 million, with the potential for additional bonuses.
As the Cardinals enter what appears to be a rebuilding phase, Maton could become a valuable trade asset if he delivers a strong first half of the season. Last year, the right-hander split time between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Mets, posting a 4.58 ERA with two saves in 40 appearances for Tampa Bay. However, he thrived in New York, recording a stellar 2.51 ERA and a 2.57 FIP across 28 2/3 innings.
In St. Louis, Maton is expected to take on a middle relief role while the team’s top arms handle high-leverage situations. If he performs well, the Cardinals may look to move him along with closer Ryan Helsley to a playoff contender in exchange for prospects.
The demand for reliable bullpen arms was sky-high last season, with teams willing to overpay for quality relievers. For example, the Miami Marlins secured a significant return for Tanner Scott. However, the Cardinals might also opt to keep Maton, given his affordable salary, making him a low-risk, high-upside addition to their bullpen.
