As Clemson kicks off spring practice, head coach Dabo Swinney is shedding light on the Tigers’ approach to the transfer portal and the team’s strong player retention heading into the 2025 season. “People say we’re against the portal, but we’ve used it three of the last four years,” Swinney noted, acknowledging the evolving nature of college football. “Last year, we had no choice.” His remarks highlight the necessity of the transfer portal in assembling a championship-caliber roster, especially as roster turnover becomes more common across the sport.
Although Swinney has previously expressed concerns about the portal, he now recognizes its value in strengthening Clemson’s lineup. The team’s latest transfers—wide receiver Tristan Smith, defensive end Will Heldt, and linebacker Jeremiah Alexander—are considered “great fits” for the program, according to Swinney. These additions are expected to make an immediate impact, bolstering both the offense and defense.
At the same time, Swinney takes pride in Clemson’s retention, with 16 starters returning for the 2025 season. He credits this stability to the program’s culture. “It speaks to who we are amid all this change. These guys could leave anytime, but we build relationships,” Swinney explained. “There’s a transaction, but it’s not transactional.”
