Manchester United loanee Antony has been nominated for La Liga’s Player of the Month award, continuing his impressive run of form since joining Real Betis.
The 25-year-old winger made the switch from Manchester to Seville in late January after falling out of favor at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim. This temporary move provided Antony with a much-needed fresh start following a disappointing stint with United after his high-profile £81 million transfer from Ajax in 2022.
While the loan agreement does not include a purchase option, Real Betis has agreed to cover 84 percent of Antony’s £105,000-a-week wages, saving Manchester United approximately £1.5 million over the remainder of the season.
A Spanish Resurgence
Despite his struggles in England, Antony has flourished in Spain, registering two goals and an assist in just three La Liga matches. He also made an impact in the Europa Conference League, netting a stunning long-range goal in Real Betis’ commanding 3-0 victory over Belgian side Gent in the first leg of their knockout tie.
His standout performances have now earned him a place among the nominees for La Liga’s Player of the Month award.
Antony has been nominated for La Liga’s Player of the Month award alongside Kylian Mbappé, Pedri, Ante Budimir, and Oihan Sancet.
Antony’s fellow nominees include Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappé, Barcelona’s rising talent Pedri, Osasuna’s Ante Budimir, and Athletic Club’s Oihan Sancet.
United’s Questionable Transfer Decisions
Manchester United’s decision-making regarding their attacking options has come under scrutiny, particularly in light of Antony’s resurgence. The club opted not to sign a replacement for him, even after Marcus Rashford secured a loan move to Aston Villa.
United’s attacking depth has been underwhelming, with Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee managing just five league goals between them. The situation worsened when Amad Diallo suffered a severe ankle injury in training, requiring surgery that is expected to sideline him for the rest of the season.
With Antony now showcasing his talent alongside players of Mbappé and Pedri’s caliber, and Rashford delivering one of the standout performances of the Premier League season last weekend, United’s decision to neglect reinforcements appears increasingly perplexing.
