Boston Bruins Sign Two Defensemen
On Friday, Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced the signing of defensemen Michael Callahan and Alec Regula to one-year, two-way contracts, each carrying a salary cap hit of $775,000.
Michael Callahan, 24, played 70 games with the Providence Bruins in the AHL during the 2023-24 season, where he recorded four goals and 13 assists. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 196 pounds, Callahan has accumulated six goals and 21 assists in 140 career AHL games, all with Providence. He previously spent four seasons at Providence College, amassing 13 goals and 53 assists over 138 games. A native of Franklin, Massachusetts, Callahan was initially selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Draft and was traded to Boston for a seventh-round draft pick on February 22, 2022.
Alec Regula, 23, appeared in 55 games with the Providence Bruins in the 2023-24 season, notching four goals and 22 assists with a plus-36 rating. The 6-foot-4, 218-pound defenseman has played 163 career AHL games with Providence and the Rockford IceHogs, recording 16 goals and 61 assists with a plus-42 rating. Regula has also played in 22 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks, scoring one goal. Originally from West Bloomfield, Michigan, Regula was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round (67th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft and joined Boston in a trade involving defenseman Ian Mitchell for forwards Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno on June 26, 2023.
