Steve Kerr Reveals All But One Golden State Warriors Player Were Involved in Trade Talks This Summer
As the Golden State Warriors entered the offseason, they knew significant roster changes were necessary after missing the playoffs. To manage the rising team payroll, the likelihood of re-signing Klay Thompson seemed slim. When the Warriors facilitated Thompson’s trade to the Dallas Mavericks, they quickly added Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson, and De’Anthony Melton to their lineup.
Despite the numerous rumors involving big names like Lauri Markkanen, the Warriors did not make a blockbuster trade. According to head coach Steve Kerr, this was not due to a lack of effort. Kerr revealed that all Golden State players, except for Stephen Curry, were included in trade discussions this summer. This included promising young players like Jonathan Kuminga and first-year pro Brandin Podziemski.
“There are very few players in the league who are not mentioned in trade discussions. Steph Curry is not one of them. Everyone else is,” said Kerr.
While Kuminga and Podziemski were discussed, no deals involving them were finalized. With the 2024-25 NBA season still ahead, it’s unlikely they will be traded for anything less than a star player.
It’s understandable that the Warriors considered trades involving Andrew Wiggins, who is in the second year of a four-year, $109 million contract. Wiggins’ $26.2 million cap hit is the second-largest on the team, following Curry’s $55.7 million and ahead of Draymond Green’s $24.1 million.
We’re also curious to see if Green addresses his inclusion in trade talks on his podcast. The 12-year veteran may not appreciate the possibility of being traded by the only NBA team he’s ever played for, but that’s the reality for aging stars in today’s game.
