The Raiders have added two experienced coaches to their staff, bringing in Joe Woods as defensive pass-game coordinator and Chris Beatty as wide receivers coach.
Woods, a veteran coach with 33 years of experience—22 in the NFL and 11 in college—previously served as defensive coordinator for the Broncos (2017-2018) and Browns (2020-2022). Most recently, he was the Saints’ defensive coordinator for two seasons but was not retained amid New Orleans’ coaching changes. This marks a return to the Raiders for Woods, who was their defensive backs coach in 2014 when the team was based in Oakland. Known for his expertise in coaching defensive backs, Woods has led top-10 pass defenses in four of his seven seasons as a coordinator.
Meanwhile, Beatty joins the Raiders after coaching wide receivers for the Chargers and Bears. His coaching career began at the high school level before he spent 15 years in the college ranks in various offensive roles. In 2021, he entered the NFL as the Chargers’ wide receivers coach but was not retained when Jim Harbaugh took over in 2024. Beatty later moved to the Bears, initially coaching wide receivers before being promoted to interim offensive coordinator following Matt Eberflus’ dismissal. However, offensive play-calling remained with interim head coach Thomas Brown, and neither coach was retained under new head coach Ben Johnson.
During his time with the Chargers, Beatty helped Keenan Allen achieve a career-best season in 2023, though the rest of the receiving corps struggled. In Las Vegas, he will work with a receiving unit that lacks proven depth beyond Jakobi Meyers, who had a career-best 2024 season despite the team’s instability at quarterback.
