The Detroit Lions have undergone a major coaching overhaul this offseason, with several key staff members departing following their Divisional Round loss to the Washington Commanders. Among the biggest losses was offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who was poached by the division-rival Chicago Bears.
Jared Goff, speaking from the 2025 Pro Bowl Games in Orlando, addressed Johnson’s departure in an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio. With a mix of humor and competitiveness, Goff admitted, “I was joking with him—I wish he didn’t have to be in our division so I didn’t have to try and beat him twice a year.”
Despite the professional rivalry, Goff emphasized his respect for Johnson, calling himself a lifelong fan of the coach. The Lions’ quarterback also turned his focus to new offensive coordinator John Morton, revealing that the two have already spoken and share a prior connection—Morton was a senior offensive assistant with the Lions in 2022.
Detroit’s offense was a powerhouse in 2024, ranking among the NFL’s elite. They finished second in total offense (409.5 yards per game) and passing offense (263.2 yards per game), while also ranking first in points per game (33.2). With a loaded roster featuring stars like Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, David Montgomery, and Jahmyr Gibbs, Morton faces the daunting task of maintaining the explosive standard Johnson set.
However, with over 20 years of NFL experience—including stints with the Raiders, Saints, 49ers, Jets, and Broncos—Morton brings a wealth of knowledge to Detroit. His challenge will be adapting to an already dynamic offense while putting his own stamp on the scheme.
One thing is clear: Goff and the Lions are locked in on ensuring Johnson’s departure doesn’t slow them down. In fact, they’ll be extra motivated to take down their former play-caller when they face the Bears twice in 2025.
