JUST IN: Phillies Reeling After Star Closer Bolts for Royals in a Jaw-Dropping Free Agency Decision, Shaking Up Their Championship Hopes.

The Philadelphia Phillies were dealt a tough blow this offseason as star closer Carlos Estévez decided to leave in free agency.

Carlos Estévez Signs with Royals, Departing Phillies’ Bullpen

As reported by CBS Sports’ Matt Snyder, Estévez has finalized a deal with the Kansas City Royals, worth $20 million over two years with a $13 million club option for a third year. While the Royals have yet to officially announce the signing, ESPN and MLB.com have confirmed the news. Estévez was ranked as the 34th top free agent this winter.

Royals to Gain Reliable Closer in Estévez for 2025

Estévez, who has been a consistent ninth-inning option, will now bring his closing prowess to the Royals, who finished with 41 saves in 2024, ranking ninth in MLB. Over the past two years, Estévez recorded 26 saves in 2024, just shy of his 31 saves in 2023. His outstanding 2.45 ERA and 0.909 WHIP make him an ideal addition to bolster Kansas City’s bullpen as they aim to improve in 2025.

For the Phillies, Estévez’s departure, along with the absence of 2024 All-Star Jeff Hoffman, means the team will lean on Jordan Romano to lead their revamped relief unit in the coming season.
