Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has assembled a coaching staff with a blend of seasoned leadership and youthful innovation, hoping to turn the team’s fortunes around after a 5-12 season.
Dennis Allen, the newly appointed defensive coordinator, brings extensive experience as a former head coach for both the Raiders and the Saints. On the other hand, 28-year-old Declan Doyle steps in as the league’s youngest offensive coordinator, eager to prove himself at the highest level.
Despite their different backgrounds, Allen—who previously worked with Doyle in New Orleans—sees something special in his former colleague.
“The first thing you notice about him is his intelligence,” Allen said. “He’s been around football, he understands it from multiple angles, and I think he has a really bright future.”
Doyle, who most recently coached tight ends for the Denver Broncos under Sean Payton, doesn’t believe his age will be a factor in commanding respect from players.
“At the end of the day, knowledge is what matters,” Doyle said. “That’s what players care about. Last year was actually the first time I was older than everyone in my position group.”
With Johnson taking on play-calling duties, Doyle sees his role as shaping the bigger picture for the offense.
“My job is to structure and detail the game plan,” Doyle explained. “Ben will have less time than ever as a play-caller, so I’ll focus on organizing everything alongside our staff.”
One player Doyle is particularly excited to work with is quarterback Caleb Williams. Drawing parallels to Bo Nix’s development in Denver, he believes Williams has the potential to be a game-changer.
“The kid’s talent speaks for itself,” Doyle said. “His athleticism, his toughness—it’s all there. But what really separates him is his ability to create outside of structure. That’s a rare trait.”
On the defensive end, experience won’t be a concern. Allen, who led the Saints from 2022 to 2024, takes over a unit that struggled late last season under former defensive leader Matt Eberflus. However, he sees plenty of reasons for optimism, particularly in Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson.
“I think we’ve got some great pieces, especially in the secondary,” Allen said. “I’m also encouraged by what we have at linebacker and defensive line. The foundation is in place.”
Chicago’s defense played a key role in their midseason resurgence last year, but the offense ultimately failed to keep pace, leading to their disappointing record. Allen, however, believes the team has the personnel to succeed.
“We have size and length at cornerback, and Kyler Gordon is a phenomenal nickel defender,” he said. “I have a clear vision of how to utilize him, and I think we have the tools to build something strong.”
With fresh leadership on both sides of the ball, the Bears are hoping their new coordinators will be the key to a much-needed resurgence in 2025.
