JUST IN: Maple Leafs Prepare for a High-Impact Shakeup, Pursuing a $98 Million Trade to Add a Superstar Center and Defensive Juggernaut to Their Lineup.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, one of the NHL’s top teams, are gearing up for a busy trade deadline on March 7. A potential blockbuster trade has been proposed on PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, with the Leafs targeting Jean-Gabriel Pageau and defenseman Scott Mayfield from the New York Islanders.

In this deal, the Maple Leafs would send:

  • Nick Robertson
  • Jani Hakanpaa
  • 2027 first-round pick
  • 2027 fourth-round pick

In return, Toronto would acquire:

  • Jean-Gabriel Pageau
  • Scott Mayfield

This trade would see the Leafs strengthen their roster with Pageau as their third-line center, a role they need filled. Pageau, currently in the fifth year of his six-year, $30 million contract, has 9 goals and 13 assists (22 points) in 43 games this season. Known for his solid defensive play, Pageau would also contribute offensively.

Mayfield, in the second year of his seven-year, $24.5 million contract, would be a welcome addition to Toronto’s defense. A shutdown defender, he could slot into the second pairing. With 2 goals and 5 assists (7 points) in 45 games this season, Mayfield would add depth to their blue line.

The Islanders would receive two players in Robertson and Hakanpaa, as well as the 2027 draft picks. Robertson, a former second-round pick, has 8 goals and 4 assists (12 points) in 40 games this season and is seen as a potential asset for the Islanders’ rebuilding efforts. Hakanpaa, dealing with injuries this year, would take Mayfield’s spot on the Islanders’ blue line before heading to free agency.

Maple Leafs Seek Center Depth

With John Tavares dealing with an injury, the Leafs are looking to bolster their center position. General Manager Brad Treliving has expressed interest in adding a third-line center, though he acknowledges the team’s existing depth at the position. Treliving praised Tavares’ performance but noted that, like many other teams, the Leafs are always looking to improve their center depth.

“We’ve seen some guys step up and play well,” Treliving said. “It gives insight into what we have within the organization.”

With a 30-16-2 record and leading the Atlantic Division, Toronto is in a strong position as the deadline approaches.

Islanders Monitoring Trade Targets

Although the Islanders are currently outside the playoff picture with a 19-20-7 record, they may look to make aggressive moves ahead of the deadline. The team has reportedly shown interest in Vancouver Canucks players J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson. The Islanders are particularly keen on Pettersson, who is in the second year of a seven-year, $8 million deal.

This trade activity suggests that both the Maple Leafs and Islanders are preparing for significant roster adjustments as the March 7 deadline looms.
