Astros Likely to Part Ways With $43 Million Icon Following Christian Walker Signing…
The Houston Astros made headlines on Friday by reportedly securing a three-year, $60 million deal with Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker. Before choosing Houston, Walker was a key target for the New York Yankees. However, the Astros will need to free up payroll, likely leading to the departure of several players in free agency.
Cody Williams of FanSided recently suggested that the Astros may part ways with veteran pitcher Justin Verlander this offseason, particularly after committing significant funds to Walker. “Verlander posted a 5.48 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP over 17 starts this past season, struggling to recapture the dominance that defined much of his career,” Williams noted. “The Astros seem ready to move on from the familiarity of past successes.”
Williams further highlighted Verlander’s age and ongoing health concerns, questioning his ability to perform at an elite level. “Any hope of Verlander returning to Houston appears to be off the table,” he added.
The Astros paid Verlander over $40 million last season, only to see him deliver below-average performances. With the conclusion of the 2024 season, Verlander’s tenure in Houston seems to have reached its end. While the legendary right-hander may find opportunities elsewhere, it is increasingly clear that his future does not lie with the Astros.
