Alex Bregman’s time with the Houston Astros might be nearing its end. The homegrown star, a three-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, has spent nine seasons with the team. Despite the Astros offering Bregman a six-year, $156 million deal, the third baseman is reportedly holding out for more.
As Bregman remains unsigned, the Astros shook up their roster by trading three-time All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for infielder Isaac Paredes and two top prospects: infielder Cam Smith and pitcher Hayden Wesneski. Paredes, who had an impressive 2024 season and is versatile enough to play both third and first base, is expected to thrive in Houston’s hitter-friendly Minute Maid Park.
Following the trade, MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart reported that some inside the Astros organization view Bregman’s return as a “longshot.” Now, according to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, the door on Bregman’s return is likely closing, as the Astros are making a serious push to land St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado.
While a deal isn’t imminent, discussions between the Cardinals and Astros have reportedly intensified since the Winter Meetings in Dallas, with Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak acknowledging that he plans to try and move Arenado. The 33-year-old is owed $74 million over the next three years and has a no-trade clause that he would need to waive.
If Arenado joins the Astros, he would take over as the starting third baseman, with Paredes stepping in at first base, leaving Bregman without a spot. Arenado has earned eight All-Star selections, 10 Gold Gloves, and hit 341 home runs during his 12 seasons with the Cardinals and Rockies.
