The Houston Astros ruled much of the 2010s thanks to a powerhouse roster, but much of that core talent has gradually departed for other teams via free agency. Now, another key player, longtime third baseman Alex Bregman, could be the next to leave. Bregman has spent his entire career with the Astros, playing 1,111 games, accumulating nearly 40 WAR, and hitting 191 home runs. He’s also earned a Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger, and two World Series championships during his nine years with the team. One team frequently linked to Bregman is the Detroit Tigers, which seems like a fitting destination.
FanSided’s Nick Villano predicts that the Tigers could sign Bregman this offseason, pulling him away from Houston. Spotrac forecasts a four-year, $119 million contract for the star third baseman, although it’s believed that Bregman may seek a larger payday. Villano explained that the Tigers, after a successful season driven by youthful talent, have a promising future. They made the playoffs and even advanced to Game 5 of the ALDS after sweeping the Astros in the Wild Card round. For Bregman, joining the Tigers could mean betting on their young roster to develop into the next great team, with him as the centerpiece.
A move to Detroit seems like a reasonable fit for Bregman this winter, though Villano points out the risk of him relying on the Tigers’ unproven youth. While Houston is expected to make a competitive offer to keep him, the Tigers could have a shot at luring him away if they offer slightly more.
