The Detroit Lions have been eagerly awaiting the impact of cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, a significant offseason acquisition in 2023. After a string of devastating injuries, Moseley’s return to action could finally be on the horizon.
Moseley, who joined the Lions while recovering from a torn ACL suffered in 2022, faced another setback early in the 2023 season when he tore the ACL in his other knee just two snaps into his debut. Re-signing with Detroit, his comeback plans were delayed again by a torn pectoral muscle sustained during training camp in August.
However, recent updates suggest Moseley is making significant progress.
Signs of Progress in Practice
On November 8, the Lions activated Moseley’s practice window from injured reserve. This week, he was listed as a full participant in Wednesday’s practice estimation—a strong signal that his long-awaited return could be imminent.
Analysts at Quarter4 highlighted the importance of Moseley’s full participation:
“His ability to be listed as a full participant Wednesday is a good sign that his return could be coming sooner rather than later. A clearer picture of his status for Sunday will likely come Thursday or Friday.”
Lions head coach Dan Campbell previously hinted that Moseley’s return was on the cards. Speaking in late October, Campbell noted that Moseley had begun ramping up his activities and had even traveled with the team.
“Yeah, we’re going to get him back. It’s just a matter of, when is that? He’s doing pretty good. He’s really progressed nicely and he’s healed up well,” Campbell told The Detroit News.
Offensive Boost Also on the Horizon
While Moseley’s exact return date remains uncertain, the Lions may also regain another key player on offense. Tight end Sam LaPorta, sidelined with a shoulder sprain during a win against the Houston Texans, is trending toward playing in Sunday’s matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
“It’s questionable to above,” Campbell said of LaPorta’s status. “I think it’s trending the right way.”
In LaPorta’s absence, the tight end group—including Brock Wright, Shane Zylstra, and James Mitchell—stepped up. Wright, in particular, stood out with a five-yard touchdown catch during the Lions’ commanding 52-6 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“Brock carried the load for us, man,” Campbell said. “He played a lot of reps, did the dirty work, and was outstanding in protection. Zylstra, too, has quietly gone about his business and done his job.”
With key players like Moseley and LaPorta nearing their returns, the Lions look poised to strengthen both sides of the ball as the season progresses.
