Walsall Coach Darren Byfield Highlights Key to Strong Start This Season…
Walsall first-team coach Darren Byfield credits “time” as the crucial factor behind the team’s impressive start to the season under Mat Sadler’s management.
Last season, the Saddlers struggled initially but rallied under Sadler, pushing for a League Two play-off spot before finishing five points shy of the top seven. This year, however, they have soared to second place in the standings, earning 27 points from their first 14 fourth-tier matches. Additionally, Walsall reached the EFL Cup third round for the first time since 2015 and are still competing in both the FA Cup and EFL Trophy.
Byfield believes the team’s recent form reflects patience and the gradual emergence of Sadler’s vision for the squad.
When asked about the biggest difference compared to the previous season, Byfield stated:
“Honestly, it’s time. Everyone needs to understand this is the gaffer’s first managerial role. He brought in his staff, and we’ve all had to adapt to his expectations and requirements. Building relationships—between staff and players—is essential, and that’s taken time.
“Now you’re seeing what a Mat Sadler team looks like. But we know we’ve achieved nothing yet, and we’ll keep working hard to secure success in whatever form it takes.”
While maintaining a strong core from last season, Walsall made notable signings, including Connor Barrett, Charlie Lakin, and Nathan Lowe. The summer also saw a significant change in the goalkeeping department. Jackson Smith and Owen Evans departed, as did goalkeeper coach Dan Watson, who was replaced by Dan Still. On-loan Stoke City prospect Tommy Simkin has stepped up as a promising young goalkeeper, with Sam Hornby offering dependable backup in the EFL Trophy.
Byfield praised the collective hard work of both players and staff as the driving force behind the team’s progress. He also highlighted Still’s dedication:
“Dan Still has been fantastic. His attention to detail and work ethic are remarkable. While I don’t directly deal with goalkeepers—they’re usually the ‘enemy’ since we aim to score against them—it’s clear his contribution has been vital.
“We push each other—staff and players alike—and maintain a healthy, driven relationship. We’re determined to achieve success, but we know it depends on hard work. If we give our all, we can look back with no regrets.”
Byfield’s words underline the sense of unity and determination within the Walsall camp as they aim to build on their promising start to the season.
