Bucks rookie AJ Johnson has officially signed his first NBA contract, as noted in the NBA’s transaction log. Johnson, a 6-foot-5 guard from California, chose to bypass college basketball in the U.S. and played the 2023-24 season in Australia’s National Basketball League with the Illawarra Hawks through the NBL’s Next Stars program. During his time with the Hawks, Johnson’s playing time was limited to 7.9 minutes per game over 25 games, averaging 2.8 points and 1.3 rebounds with shooting percentages of .355/.286/.538. Despite this, his performance at the draft combine impressed teams with his athleticism, showing significant potential. Turning 19 in December, Johnson will be one of the youngest NBA players next season. As the 23rd pick in the draft, he is set to earn a first-year salary of approximately $2.94 million, with a four-year total around $14.76 million if he signed for the maximum 120% of the rookie scale. It’s uncommon for players to sign for less than this maximum. Notably, half of the first-round picks from this year’s draft have now signed their rookie scale contracts.
