The Atlanta Braves should consider reuniting with veteran reliever Kirby Yates to strengthen their bullpen, especially with A.J. Minter potentially departing in free agency and Joe Jimenez sidelined for most, if not all, of the 2025 season.
Even if Minter returns, which remains a possibility, the Braves still need another reliable high-leverage pitcher, and Yates could fit the bill perfectly. The former star closer has made an impressive comeback. A few offseasons ago, Atlanta took a chance on him after he underwent Tommy John surgery. Though he missed most of the 2022 season, he returned to action in 2023.
That season, Yates posted a solid 3.28 ERA with an impressive 11.9 K/9 rate. However, the Braves declined his $5.75 million club option for 2024, opting for a $1.25 million buyout instead, partly due to concerning peripherals. Yates recorded a 4.63 FIP and 5.8 BB/9 while struggling in high-pressure situations. While Atlanta’s initial gamble on his multi-year deal was wise, they didn’t extend their commitment beyond 2023.
Yates then signed a one-year, $4.5 million deal with the Texas Rangers and returned to elite form. He delivered a remarkable 1.17 ERA, racked up 33 saves, and was among the league’s best relievers, ranking in the 100th percentile for xERA, 98th percentile for strikeout rate, and 95th percentile for limiting hard contact.
If the Braves believe Yates can sustain that level of performance, it would be prudent to reach out and explore his contract expectations. MLB Trade Rumors projects a one-year, $14 million deal for Yates—would the Braves be willing to make that investment?
