Predators Acquire Steven Stamkos on First Day of Free Agency: A New Chapter Begins
Steven Stamkos, the all-time leading scorer for the Tampa Bay Lightning, signed a four-year, $32 million contract with the Nashville Predators on Monday, marking a significant moment in NHL free agency.
Stamkos, a two-time Stanley Cup champion and former Lightning captain, confirmed the news from his home in Florida via Zoom, expressing his excitement about joining the Predators. “It’s a very special moment for my family and I, and we couldn’t be more excited to be joining the Nashville Predators organization,” he said. “Nashville was the team we decided to sign with, and we’re thrilled to be part of this amazing franchise.”
The decision came after weeks of speculation and conversations with former teammates Ryan McDonagh and Luke Schenn, as well as observing the Predators’ impressive performance towards the end of the season. Stamkos noted the team’s strong finish and new vision as key factors in his decision. “To see the run that they went on, to see how close they were in the playoffs… Then to add the players that they did today, it just magnifies the talent level that’s on this team,” Stamkos said.
Adding to the excitement, Stamkos will reunite with former teammate Jonathan Marchessault, whom the Predators also signed. Stamkos and Marchessault last played together nine years ago.
Stamkos brings an impressive resume to Nashville, including two Stanley Cups, two Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophies, and the Mark Messier Leadership Award. He is Tampa Bay’s all-time leader in goals (555) and points (1,137), and his 40-goal season in 2023-24 marked his seventh career 40-goal season.
Barry Trotz, the Predators’ General Manager, hailed the signing as a pivotal moment for the franchise. “Today was a very good day for our team and the organization, but also for the players,” Trotz said. “It’s a statement for the rest of the NHL that these players will come to Nashville. We’re very determined to win.”
Stamkos is eager to bring his leadership and experience to Nashville, aiming to contribute both on and off the ice. “I hope to bring what I’ve always brought, and that’s leadership and production on the ice,” Stamkos said. “We know how great of a city Nashville is and how passionate the Smashville fan base is at Bridgestone Arena. So, we’re really excited.”
