Detroit Lions Shake up the Roster, Adding 2 Fresh Faces to the 53-Man Squad and Elevating 2 Players From the Practice Squad.

The Detroit Lions have made several roster adjustments in preparation for their crucial game against the Green Bay Packers. Here’s a summary of the changes:

– Released TE Parker Hesse
– Signed LB Abraham Beauplan and DL Chris Smith to the 53-man roster
– Elevated TE Shane Zylstra and DL Al-Quadin Muhammad from the practice squad

Breakdown of the Moves:

Released TE Parker Hesse, Elevated TE Shane Zylstra

For the third consecutive week, Zylstra has been elevated from the practice squad, indicating he has moved ahead of Hesse on the depth chart. Hesse has not played in the last two games, while Zylstra has even taken on fullback duties, a new role for him. “No matter where you put him, he’s going to give it everything he’s got,” said tight ends coach Steve Heiden. Zylstra has now reached the maximum number of elevations for a single season, meaning the Lions must officially sign him to the 53-man roster if they wish to continue using him. Hesse, being a veteran, is not subject to waivers and could be re-signed to the practice squad next week.

Signed DL Chris Smith and LB Abraham Beauplan

With Mekhi Wingo and Malcolm Rodriguez unavailable, the Lions needed to bolster their defensive line. At 6-foot-1 and 316 pounds, Smith closely resembles Wingo’s playing style and will help fill the gap left by Wingo’s ankle injury. Smith, an undrafted free agent from Notre Dame, has only seen limited action in the NFL, playing eight snaps in the season opener. Beauplan is set to make his NFL debut after spending his rookie season with the Vikings on injured reserve. Signed during training camp, he has been on the practice squad and impressed during the preseason, providing much-needed depth at linebacker.

Elevated Al-Quadin Muhammad

After debuting with the Lions last week and recording six pressures, Muhammad is again elevated from the practice squad. Coach Dan Campbell praised his performance, noting his physicality and experience in the league. The Lions have used two of Muhammad’s three practice squad elevations so far.

Looking ahead, the Lions may continue to adjust their roster early next week as they prepare to activate Jameson Williams from the reserve/suspended list after the game against the Packers. Currently, there is no available roster spot for him.
