The Kansas City Royals made a stunning comeback in 2024, rebounding from a 106-loss season in 2023 to win 86 games and secure a wildcard series victory over the Orioles. Although they ultimately lost to the Yankees in the ALDS, this turnaround was impressive, especially given the struggles of their outfield lineup.
Despite the Royals’ success, the outfield’s offensive production was among the lowest, collectively slashing .219/.282/.366 with only 58 RBI and 225 strikeouts. Key players in this lineup included left fielder MJ Melendez, centerfielder Kyle Isbel, and right fielder Hunter Renfroe. If Renfroe exercises his player option, all three could return in 2025. Isbel’s strong defense partially offsets his lackluster offense, though his Defensive Runs Saved and Ultimate Zone Rating both declined from 2023 to 2024.
To address this issue, the Royals could pursue free-agent outfielders who would bolster their lineup alongside top hitters like Bobby Witt Jr., Vinnie Pasquantino, and Salvador Perez. High-priced stars like Juan Soto and Cody Bellinger are likely out of reach, but here are three more realistic options.
3. Tyler O’Neill
O’Neill, while not a high-average hitter, has twice hit over 30 home runs, including a 2024 season where he slashed .241/.336/.511 with 31 homers. Known for his inconsistency and injury history, O’Neill could still be valuable at 30, though his high strikeout rate may be an issue in Kauffman Stadium. He’s likely to seek around $60 million over three years, a sum the Royals could manage.
2. Teoscar Hernandez
A power hitter with a solid track record, Hernandez has averaged 29 home runs and 96 RBI over the past four seasons, though he also strikes out frequently. While he’s better defensively in right field, he can play both corners. Hernandez earned $15 million in 2024, with deferred payments through the next decade, and is likely to command at least $23.5 million for a short-term deal. This price could stretch the Royals’ budget, but he would be a worthwhile short-term upgrade.
1. Anthony Santander
Santander may be the best affordable option, having slashed .235/.308/.506 with 44 home runs in 2024. At 30, he offers power and consistency, and the Royals may need to consider a five-year deal worth up to $135 million to secure him. Predominantly a right fielder, he would provide a significant offensive boost if Renfroe moved to left field.
For the Royals to improve their outfield production, they may need to part with young, underperforming talent. This strategic shift could help sustain the momentum built in 2024 as they aim for consistent competitiveness.
