BREAKING NEWS: Edmonton Oilers Eye a Top-Tier Defenseman from the Columbus Blue Jackets on the Trading Block.

The Edmonton Oilers are in urgent need of a seasoned defenseman as they approach this year’s playoffs, and a strong candidate might be available for trade.

David Pagnotta from the Fourth Period reports that multiple NHL teams are inquiring about defenseman Ivan Provorov from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

At 27 years old, Provorov is a left-shot defenseman who was selected 7th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2015 draft. Initially seen as a potential star due to his junior career and a sophomore NHL season where he scored 17 goals, he has since transitioned into a more defensive role. Playing on struggling teams like the Flyers and Blue Jackets, he has faced challenges in achieving favorable analytical metrics.

Despite this, Provorov is attractive because he is capable of logging nearly 30 minutes of ice time per game at a reasonable contract of $4.725 million. The Fourth Period noted that Columbus might be hesitant to trade Provorov, which could result in a higher asking price for interested teams. Additionally, contract negotiations with the Blue Jackets could complicate matters.

“Provorov will be in high demand as we approach the March 7 trade deadline. However, I feel that the Blue Jackets might not be ready to move him at this time,” said Pierre LeBrun, according to The Fourth Period.

In the previous season with the Blue Jackets, Provorov had a solid performance, recording 5 goals and 32 points, along with a -11 rating.

While the Oilers are mainly seeking a right-side defenseman, Provorov’s experience and cap hit make him a likely target to bolster their defense.
