The world of John Wick is set to grow even further. The high-octane franchise, starring Keanu Reeves as the iconic hitman, has already given fans four films since its 2014 debut. In 2023, Prime Video released The Continental, a spin-off series, and another film focused on Ana de Armas’ character, Eve Macarro, is in the works. Now, a new project has been announced: a feature-length prequel.
However, unlike previous installments, this prequel will be an anime, as revealed by director Chad Stahelski. “It’s exciting to explore a different medium,” Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter, calling the project “awesome.”
Stahelski explained that they’ve chosen not to follow the typical prequel/sequel path of other franchises. Instead, they want to have fun with the *John Wick* universe. Since the story was capped with John Wick: Chapter 4, the prequel offers a chance to revisit the past in a fresh way.
Though Stahelski didn’t reveal many details, he hinted that the anime will touch on Wick’s “impossible task,” the mission that led him to retire and live a peaceful life with his wife.
He noted that the anime format allows for more creativity, saying that while doing more mainline films could feel redundant, the anime and TV series provide opportunities to delve deeper into the world and be more bold in storytelling.
