The Chicago Bears now have a roster that could compete for the NFC North division following their rebuild that started in 2022. However, that doesn’t mean they should avoid making moves at the NFL trade deadline, especially if a trade proposal from Pro Football Focus (PFF) is feasible.
Bradley Locker from PFF recently proposed several trades before the November 5 deadline, including one that could strengthen the Bears’ defensive line: acquiring New Orleans Saints star Carl Granderson. Granderson, a skilled edge rusher and run defender, has emerged as a key player for the Saints, recording 8.5 sacks in 2023. Despite the Saints’ struggles this season, Granderson has already notched three sacks and 29 pressures, ranking sixth in the NFL among edge rushers.
If the Saints decide to rebuild, Granderson could be their most valuable trade asset. According to Locker, Granderson would be an ideal fit for the Bears, who have improved to 4-2 but still have a weak pass rush. No Bears player has more than 18 pressures, and only Andrew Billings has a pass-rush grade above 69.0.
While the Bears already traded for Darrell Taylor, Granderson would be a significant upgrade. With his 17% pass-rush win rate, Granderson could complement Montez Sweat and Taylor to bolster the Bears’ defense. He recently signed a four-year, $54 million contract extension, which makes him an affordable option for the next few seasons.
However, the Bears would have to consider the cost, as the Saints would likely demand a Day 2 draft pick. A potential offer could include a 2025 third-round pick, similar to what the Bears offered for Matthew Judon before he was traded to Atlanta.
While Granderson would be a valuable addition, the Bears might prioritize other needs, particularly on the offensive line. Edge rusher is still a concern, but the Bears’ bigger problem is finding a center, which is difficult to address via trade.
The Bears might even be more likely to sell players at the deadline. There has been trade interest in running back Khalil Herbert and veteran guard Nate Davis, both of whom could be expendable. The team might also explore moving Velus Jones Jr., who has seen limited action after struggling in the season opener.
Ultimately, while adding a player like Granderson is tempting, the Bears have several factors to weigh before making a move at the deadline.
