JUST IN: Detroit Red Wings Poised to Land $26 Million Goaltender in Major Trade Proposal.

The Detroit Red Wings have lacked a true No. 1 goalie for years, but a trade proposal could change that by bringing in a top goaltender.

Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, one user suggested a deal where the Red Wings acquire Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins in a major trade.

Red Wings would receive:

– Tristan Jarry
– Ryan Graves (with $750K retained)
– Samuel Poulin
– 2025 third-round pick (Minnesota’s)
– 2026 seventh-round pick (Chicago’s)

Penguins would receive:

– Cam Talbot
– Ben Chiarot
– Andrew Copp
– 2025 second-round pick
– 2026 fourth-round pick

This would be a major trade, highlighted by the goalie exchange and involving six NHL players and four draft picks. Jarry, currently in the second year of a five-year, $26.88 million contract, has struggled in Pittsburgh and was recently scratched from the lineup. Detroit would be betting on his potential to regain form.

Graves, a defenseman in the second year of a six-year, $27 million contract, could replace Chiarot on the Red Wings’ blue line, while Poulin, a 2019 first-round pick, adds prospect depth.

For Pittsburgh, Talbot, who signed a two-year, $5 million deal with Detroit, could solidify their goalie position and help them in their playoff push. Chiarot and Copp, both on multi-year deals, would bring physicality and depth to Pittsburgh’s lineup.

Analyst Critiques Jarry’s Performance

Jarry has struggled early in the 2024-25 season, with poor stats including a 5.47 GAA and a .836 save percentage. The Athletic’s Josh Yohe criticized his play, calling him “unplayable” and saying the Penguins seem uncertain about how to handle his situation.

Red Wings’ Goalie Struggles

Detroit has been rotating goalies this season with Ville Husso, Talbot, and Alex Lyon. After Husso’s poor start, he was placed on waivers but cleared them. Coach Derek Lalonde emphasized that the team hasn’t given up on Husso, and he may return to action soon despite his rough 0-1 record with a 9.42 GAA.
