The Detroit Lions have spent recent years searching for a reliable No. 2 wide receiver to alleviate some of the pressure on Amon-Ra St. Brown. Jameson Williams, the former No. 12 overall pick, appeared to be filling that role at the start of the 2024 season. Known for his exceptional speed, Williams added a much-needed vertical threat to the Lions’ offense. However, head coach Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson may need to adjust their plans as Williams is set to miss the next few games due to a rules violation.
Williams has been suspended for two games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy. While the specifics of what he tested positive for remain unclear, the suspension means he’ll be sidelined for the upcoming matchups. In a statement, Williams expressed disappointment but said he would “take it on the chin” and looks forward to rejoining his team “ASAP.” The Lions’ next games are against the tough Tennessee Titans defense and divisional rival Green Bay Packers.
In his six games this season, Williams has caught 17 passes for 361 yards (an impressive 21 yards per catch) and three touchdowns, already surpassing his previous season’s production. His absence will likely lead to increased opportunities for Kalif Raymond, while Tim Patrick and possibly Allen Robinson could also see more action.
This suspension is a setback for Williams, who had been building momentum during the Lions’ strong 5-1 start. Though Detroit might manage without him, losing such a key player to a situation like this is far from ideal.
