Could the Detroit Lions Consider Replacing Aidan Hutchinson with a Former All-Pro?
In Week 7, the Detroit Lions secured a dominant 47-9 road win over the Dallas Cowboys. However, their celebration was dampened when star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson suffered a knee injury, forcing him out of the game. He was later taken to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Irving, Texas, where he was diagnosed with fractures in his tibia and fibula. Hutchinson is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks, resulting in his placement on injured reserve.
Despite head coach Dan Campbell’s “next man up” mentality, reports suggest the Lions are open to exploring trade options to fill the void left by Hutchinson. ESPN’s Adam Schefter has mentioned that the Lions might consider acquiring Cleveland Browns pass rusher Za’Darius Smith as a temporary solution. Smith, a three-time Pro Bowler with 63 career sacks, including three this season, could be a target if Detroit looks to the trade market. Although the Browns would prefer to retain Smith, he has one year left on his contract and a relatively affordable salary.
While Hutchinson’s absence is a blow to the Lions’ defense, there is optimism that he might return if the team makes a deep playoff run. According to Schefter, sources believe that if Detroit reaches the Super Bowl, Hutchinson could potentially be back on the field. Schefter also noted that Hutchinson’s injury, though severe, was less damaging than initially feared, as he avoided any ligament, nerve, or artery damage.
Before his injury, Hutchinson was in the midst of a standout season, recording 12 tackles, leading the league with 7.5 sacks, and forcing a fumble through the first five games. As the Lions prepare to face the undefeated Minnesota Vikings, they will need to find a way to maintain their defensive strength without their star pass rusher.
