The Detroit Lions have secured one of their key offensive players for the future. Running back David Montgomery has signed a two-year contract extension worth $18.25 million, with $10.5 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The extension keeps Montgomery under contract with the Lions through the 2027 season, and the team confirmed the signing.
Drafted 73rd overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, Montgomery has been a reliable performer in the league. Over his six-year career, he has totaled 1,197 carries for 4,895 yards and 43 touchdowns. He spent his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears, achieving a career-high of 1,070 rushing yards in 2020.
Montgomery, now 27, joined the Lions as a free agent in 2023. In his debut season with Detroit, he recorded 219 carries for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns, along with 16 receptions for 117 yards in 14 games.
He formed a successful running back duo with Jahmyr Gibbs, the Lions’ first-round draft pick in 2023. Gibbs contributed 182 carries for 945 yards and 52 receptions for 316 yards, scoring 11 touchdowns in his rookie year. Their combined efforts helped lead the Lions to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991.
So far in the 2024 season, Gibbs has accumulated 361 yards and four touchdowns on 65 touches, while Montgomery has 363 yards and four touchdowns on 72 touches over four games. With this success, the Lions are ensuring that Montgomery and Gibbs will continue to lead their backfield for years to come.
The Lions will return from their bye week to face the Dallas Cowboys at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.
