The San Francisco 49ers may have found their next standout running back in rookie Isaac Guerendo, especially following Jordan Mason’s injury during Thursday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. Guerendo, stepping in for the injured Mason, delivered a significant performance, including a game-clinching 76-yard run.
Mason had been excelling in his role this season, filling in for the injured Christian McCaffrey and amassing 609 rushing yards so far. However, his shoulder injury in the first half against Seattle forced him out of the game, and after attempting to return for a single carry in the second half, he was sidelined for the remainder of the night.
The 49ers now face uncertainty regarding Mason’s condition, though they have a week’s rest before facing the Kansas City Chiefs. While hoping Mason can recover in time, the team may need to rely more heavily on their remaining backfield options.
On Thursday, the 49ers employed a mix of Guerendo, Deebo Samuel, and Patrick Taylor Jr. in Mason’s absence. Though their combined efforts were initially contained by Seattle’s defense, Guerendo’s late-game breakaway run sealed the victory, drawing comparisons to former 49ers running back Raheem Mostert. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel even noted the similarities between Guerendo and Mostert, citing Guerendo’s speed and smooth running style.
Guerendo, who wears Mostert’s former No. 31, has primarily contributed on special teams this season. However, with injuries mounting at the running back position, Thursday’s performance hints that Guerendo may have a bigger role in the 49ers’ offensive future—especially if he continues to emulate Mostert’s success.
