Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane played 11 snaps before leaving Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots due to an injury. Head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed on Monday that Achane sustained a concussion and is currently following the league’s concussion protocol. McDaniel mentioned that Achane was in good spirits despite the injury.
Before exiting late in the first quarter, Achane, a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, managed three carries for 18 yards and was targeted once. Prior to this game, he had been playing in over 62 percent of the team’s offensive snaps in the last three games.
Running back Raheem Mostert, who returned from a chest injury, took 56 percent of the snaps against New England. Meanwhile, rookie Jaylen Wright, a fourth-round pick, led Miami’s rushing attack with 86 yards on 13 carries. The Dolphins averaged 4.7 yards per carry across 41 attempts in their victory.
“We were generally disappointed with our ground game, so it became a major focus to refine our fundamentals and techniques,” McDaniel said on Sunday. “Credit to the offensive line for opening up some lanes, and the running backs stepped up and carried the load when needed.
“Having Raheem back was a big plus, though losing De’Von was a setback. But it was great to see a rookie step up and play with growing confidence.”
With the Dolphins on a bye for Week 6, Achane will have extra time to recover and move through the concussion protocol before their next game on October 20, when they face the Indianapolis Colts on the road.
