Bluejay Baseball Expands Coaching Staff with Billy Mohl and Mike Current
On Tuesday, July 2, Creighton Baseball head coach Ed Servais, along with Associate Head Coach/Coach-in-Waiting Mark Kingston, announced the appointment of Billy Mohl and Mike Current as new assistant coaches. Mohl will take on the role of pitching coach, while Current will focus on hitters and recruiting.
Mohl joins Creighton after serving as head coach at South Florida for the past seven seasons (2018-24). Current previously worked with Kingston at South Carolina as the Director of Player Development and an Assistant Coach.
“We are very pleased to have this kind of experience,” stated Servais. “Billy has been working with pitchers for over 20 years and Mike has extensive experience with hitters and recruiting. Their expertise will be invaluable as we prepare for the fall and the upcoming season.”
Mohl and Current share a long history with Kingston, starting in 2009 at Illinois State. In 2010, Kingston hired Mohl and retained Current as part of his initial staff at Illinois State, where they worked together for five seasons. The trio then moved to South Florida in 2015, guiding the Bulls for three seasons. When Kingston took the head coaching position at South Carolina in 2018, Current joined him, while Mohl became South Florida’s head coach.
“During my time at Illinois State, I learned about the rich baseball tradition at Creighton. Coach Servais has achieved great success,” said Mohl. “Reuniting with Coach Kingston and Mike is exciting, and I’m eager to get started.”
Current expressed similar enthusiasm, saying, “This marks my 17th consecutive season working with Coach Kingston, which speaks to our strong working relationship. I’ve always admired Creighton and have great respect for its program. The combination of an outstanding academic reputation and top-notch facilities makes Creighton very appealing to me and potential recruits.”
At South Florida, Mohl led the Bulls to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2018 and 2021, compiling a record of 174-187-1. A highlight was the 2021 NCAA Tournament run, where South Florida won the American Athletic Conference Tournament and made its first Super Regional appearance. Mohl’s leadership also saw 16 USF pitchers drafted, with five reaching the major leagues, including Shane McClanahan, a two-time MLB All-Star.
Current, while at South Carolina, worked with notable outfielders like Carlos Cortes and TJ Hopkins, both of whom were drafted into MLB. At South Florida, he helped the team achieve high batting averages and notable home run and stolen base totals. Current also contributed to a top-10 recruiting class for USF in 2015, the program’s first top-25 class.
The additions of Mohl and Current bring a wealth of experience and success to the Creighton Baseball program, positioning the team for continued growth and achievement.
