The Dolphins received disappointing news yesterday when they learned that former first-round pick Jaelan Phillips will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury. To fill Phillips’ spot on the roster, they signed Tyus Bowser off the Seahawks’ practice squad today, but further additions may be forthcoming.
Miami’s move to bring in Bowser also reunites him with defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, with whom he previously worked in Baltimore. Additionally, the team held workouts for several potential signings, including veterans Shaq Lawson, Al-Quadin Muhammad, and Cam Gill, as reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2.
Lawson and Weaver have previously been associated with the Jets, Bills, and Dolphins, although they never overlapped in their tenures. Lawson has experience with Miami, starting seven games in 2020, where he recorded four sacks and a career-high 18 quarterback hits. He has since played in the AFC East, spending a year with the Jets and two seasons with the Bills, who drafted him in 2016. His role in Buffalo last season was limited, primarily as a rotational player in the pass rush.
Muhammad had a standout 2021 season with the Colts, achieving career highs with six sacks, 48 total tackles, and 13 quarterback hits during his first year as a full-time starter. He received a new contract with the Bears but struggled to replicate his success in Chicago. After spending last year on the Colts’ practice squad and serving a six-game suspension for a violation of the NFL’s PED policy, he did not see any playing time.
Gill, an undrafted free agent from the Buccaneers, returned from injury to participate in 15 games for Tampa Bay last year. While he may not have the same pass-rushing potential as Lawson and Muhammad, he could still provide depth to Miami’s defense.
Weaver has multiple options to consider as he looks to replace Phillips moving forward, though none may match Phillips’ production. With injuries affecting both sides of the ball, the Dolphins remain focused on adding quality players to their roster.
