Jose Altuve Calls on Astros to Reward Alex Bregman with New Contract…
As Alex Bregman’s future with the Houston Astros remains uncertain, longtime teammate Jose Altuve is advocating for the franchise to offer the veteran third baseman a new contract as a gesture of gratitude for his contributions.
“He’s given so much to this organization,” Altuve said after the Astros were eliminated from the playoffs by the Detroit Tigers. “Now it’s time for us, as a team and as an organization, to pay him back and keep him here.”
Bregman, 30, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft and has since played a pivotal role in the Astros’ success, winning two championships and earning two All-Star selections. He has also finished in the top five in American League MVP voting twice, including a second-place finish in 2019, when he posted a .296 average, 41 home runs, and 112 RBIs.
The five-year, $100 million extension Bregman signed in 2019 has now expired, with Bregman earning $30.5 million in each of the last two seasons. In 2024, he hit .260 with 26 home runs, marking his third-highest total.
Altuve, who has been Bregman’s teammate for nine seasons, expressed confidence that the Astros would retain Bregman, saying, “We won’t be the same organization without him. In my mind, this wasn’t the last game with him.”
Bregman, who thanked Houston fans on social media after the game, said he hasn’t yet processed his future with the team but expressed his desire to return. “I hope so,” he said when asked about re-signing. “It’s been an honor to play here and compete for this city.”
Bregman made his MLB debut in 2016 and quickly became a key player, helping the Astros win the World Series in 2017. He, along with Altuve, led the team to the American League Championship Series from 2017 to 2023. Despite losing other star players like Carlos Correa and George Springer, the Astros captured another championship in 2022.
Bregman ranks among the top 10 in multiple categories in Astros history, including home runs, doubles, RBIs, and defensive WAR. Altuve emphasized Bregman’s value to the franchise, saying, “He means a lot. It’s time to pay him back and keep him here.”
Altuve, 34, recently signed a five-year, $125 million extension with the Astros and will remain under contract through 2029.
