Calvin Pickard exited Saturday’s game against the Seattle Kraken following a collision, sparking worries about the Edmonton Oilers’ goaltending depth.
During the Oilers’ preseason matchup, Pickard, expected to be the team’s backup goalie, sustained an injury and left the game with just over eight minutes remaining in the first period. He was injured after teammate Noah Philp collided with him due to Seattle forward Yanni Gourde driving toward the net.
Pickard went down awkwardly, immediately clutching his facemask after dropping his blocker. Though he managed to get up on his own and initially seemed fine, he did not return. Olivier Rodrigue, a goalie from the AHL, stepped in and completed the game, making 19 saves on 22 shots to help the Oilers secure the win.
Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch mentioned after the game that Pickard was being evaluated and they would have more updates on his condition by Sunday.
Pickard’s Expected Role as Backup This Season
At 31, Pickard was anticipated to back up starting goaltender Stuart Skinner this season after signing a two-year contract in the offseason. Last year, Pickard recorded solid stats, with a 12-7-1 record, a .909 save percentage, and a 2.45 goals-against average in 23 games. The Oilers hoped to have him play more often to ease Skinner’s workload.
While the injury doesn’t appear severe, Pickard’s early exit was likely a precaution. However, if he’s sidelined for an extended period, Rodrigue could see increased responsibilities.
Rodrigue, who was set to begin the season with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, had an impressive 2023-24 season, posting a 19-12-5 record, a .916 save percentage, and a 2.73 goals-against average.
