Maple Leafs Re-Sign Veteran Goalie Matt Murray to One-Year Contract
On July 2, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced the re-signing of veteran goaltender Matt Murray to a one-year contract worth $875,000. This follows the expiration of Murray’s previous four-year, $25 million deal with the team at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Originally signed by the Ottawa Senators in 2020, Murray was traded to Toronto on July 11, 2022, along with draft picks, in exchange for future considerations.
Murray, who turned 30 in May, played 26 games for the Leafs in the 2022-23 season, posting a 14-8-2 record with a 3.01 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage. However, he suffered a concussion on April 2, 2023, which sidelined him for the entire 2023-24 season. In September 2023, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving announced that Murray would undergo significant surgery.
Murray is a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Pittsburgh Penguins and has a career record of 146-86-24, a .910 save percentage, and a 2.79 GAA.
The Leafs also focused on securing their goaltending depth, signing young netminder Joseph Woll to a three-year, $11 million extension with a $3.66 million annual cap hit. Woll, drafted 62nd overall by the Leafs in 2016, has a year left on his entry-level contract, with the extension starting in the 2025-26 season. Woll has played 39 games for Toronto, with a 23-13-1 record, a 2.65 GAA, and a .915 save percentage. In 2024, Woll posted a 12-11-1 record with a .907 save percentage and a 2.94 GAA. He also excelled in the postseason, winning two games against the Boston Bruins with a 0.86 GAA and a .964 save percentage.
In addition to these moves, the Leafs signed former Florida Panthers goalie Anthony Stolarz to a two-year, $5 million contract with a $2.5 million annual cap hit on July 2. Drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2012, Stolarz has also played for the Anaheim Ducks and the Panthers, with whom he won the Stanley Cup. In 2024, Stolarz posted a 16-7-2 record with a .925 save percentage. His new contract includes an 8-team no-trade list for the 2025-26 season.
