The Denver Broncos have largely avoided major injuries since Sean Payton took over as head coach, but their luck changed after Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although no one initially realized it — not even the Broncos — linebacker Alex Singleton sustained a serious knee injury during the game. He reported some soreness afterward, and it was later revealed he had torn his ACL. This injury will keep him out for the rest of the 2024 season.
Remarkably, Singleton played two-thirds of the game with the torn ACL, thinking he was only dealing with minor discomfort. Head coach Sean Payton, speaking on Wednesday, said he had never seen someone play that long with such an injury. Singleton even felt he could play another game that night. It wasn’t until the next day, when the swelling became apparent, that an MRI confirmed the extent of the injury.
Since joining the Broncos in 2022, Singleton has been an impactful player, not only becoming a starter but also earning the role of team captain. He has recorded 371 total tackles in his three seasons with the team, including three games in 2024. Known for his relentless tackling, Singleton also secured the Broncos’ first turnover of the season, an interception in Week 1 against Geno Smith.
Singleton’s absence will be deeply felt. As a captain and play-caller for the defense, his leadership on the field is significant. Players like Cody Barton, Justin Strnad, or Kristian Welch may now have to step up to fill his role.
The Broncos have been hit hard by injuries at linebacker this year. They lost Josey Jewell in free agency to the Panthers, nearly lost Justin Strnad, and saw Drew Sanders sidelined before the 2024 NFL Draft with an injury that might keep him out for the entire season. Additionally, Jonas Griffith suffered a knee injury during the preseason, and now Singleton is also out.
A potential bright spot is the performance of Justin Strnad, who had an excellent preseason and could emerge as a standout replacement for Singleton. The team is also optimistic about Kristian Welch, a recent addition from the Packers, who has already contributed defensively in the first three games.
The Broncos have also reinforced their linebacker depth by adding veterans Kwon Alexander and Zach Cunningham to the practice squad, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see one of them activated for their upcoming game against the Jets.
