The New York Rangers are positioned to compete for the Stanley Cup and should prioritize creating a strong championship-caliber team. As the offseason concludes, the chances for a significant trade before the deadline are slim, but anything can happen. One proposed mock trade suggests a way to enhance the Rangers’ roster as the new season approaches.

In this scenario, the Rangers would trade Kaapo Kakko, Ryan Lindgren, and Jonny Brodzinski to the Minnesota Wild, along with two draft picks: a first-round pick and a fifth-round pick for 2025, both originally belonging to Minnesota.

Regardless of whether this trade occurs, it seems Kakko’s time in New York may be nearing its end due to his struggles throughout his career. The Rangers might want to consider better options for their third line. Although Lindgren has been a reliable player on the team’s top defensive unit, his history of injuries could prompt the Rangers to seek a more dependable long-term solution.

In return for their proposed package, the Rangers would bring back Mats Zuccarello and acquire elite defenseman Jonas Brodin from Minnesota, along with a second-round pick in 2025.

Zuccarello, who is now 37, had a memorable stint with the Rangers earlier in his career and was a fan favorite. Despite his age, he remains effective, having recorded 63 points in 69 games last season with Minnesota. He would significantly strengthen the Rangers’ third line by taking over Kakko’s spot.

The highlight of this potential deal would be acquiring Brodin. A former 10th overall pick in 2011, the 31-year-old has established himself as one of the NHL’s top defensemen. While he doesn’t score many points, Brodin is an exceptional lockdown defender with skills that surpass those of Lindgren. Swapping Lindgren for Brodin would greatly enhance the Rangers’ defensive lineup.
