Former Rangers Forward Secures Major Contract, Still Not Replaced in New York
While the New York Rangers continue their search for a replacement for Pavel Buchnevich, the skilled forward has signed a six-year, $48 million contract extension with the St. Louis Blues. Since being traded to the Blues on July 23, 2021, Buchnevich has maintained an impressive point-per-game pace, tallying 206 points in 216 regular-season games, and has scored at least 26 goals in each of his three seasons with the team, including a career-high 30 goals in the 2021-22 season.
The Rangers, despite achieving three consecutive 100-point seasons, a Presidents’ Trophy, and two trips to the Eastern Conference Final, have struggled to find a right winger who can replicate Buchnevich’s chemistry with center Mika Zibanejad and left-wing Chris Kreider. Frank Vatrano had some success on the top line after being acquired in 2022, contributing to a Stanley Cup Playoff run that ended in the conference final. However, other attempts with players like Patrick Kane, Vladimir Tarasenko, Kaapo Kakko, Blake Wheeler, Jimmy Vesey, and Dryden Hunt have not produced the same level of success.
Meanwhile, Buchnevich has been a model of consistency for the Blues, accumulating 83 goals and 123 assists over the past three seasons. With his new extension, he is set to remain with the Blues through the 2030-31 season, becoming the third-highest paid player on the team.
The Rangers recently acquired veteran forward Reilly Smith from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for two draft picks. Smith, who scored 13 goals and 40 points last season, will be considered for the right wing position on the Zibanejad line when training camp begins. The Rangers may also explore other trade options or consider internal candidates like rookie Brennan Othmann, Will Cuylle, Kakko, and possibly Filip Chytil, who played right wing during the playoffs.
While the Rangers continue their search, Buchnevich will focus on helping the Blues return to the playoffs after a three-year absence.
