Legendary Phoenix Suns play-by-play announcer Al McCoy has passed away at the age of 91, the team announced. McCoy, a beloved Ring of Honor member, peacefully passed away after a remarkable career that spanned 51 seasons as “The Voice of the Suns.” Known as the “dean of NBA broadcasters,” McCoy started calling Suns games in 1972, with his final broadcast on May 11, 2023. His iconic catchphrases like “Shazam!” and “Heartbreak Hotel” became trademarks, cementing his legacy in Arizona and NBA history.
McCoy’s contributions to sports were recognized with multiple honors, including the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. He was also inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, becoming the 15th inductee into the Suns’ prestigious Ring of Honor in 2017.
Born in Williams, Iowa, in 1933, McCoy developed a passion for radio early, starting his career in broadcasting at Drake University. Moving to Arizona in 1956, his career took shape as he covered the Phoenix Giants baseball team. McCoy is survived by his three sons, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
